8 months ago, I bought the cheapest six cylinder, manual transmission BMW 5 Series E60 in Scotland for £2000, around 35% less than the market average. Soon, I may be moving to the US, and plan on writing a review while I still have the car. I plan to include what I’ve had to fix, what I chose not to fix, how practical it is, and what its like to drive.

What else would you like to know about it?

Judging by the registration plate,  was it originally from N orthern Ireland?

Why is the steering wheel on the wrong side?

The history report said it was imported to the UK, so I think it would be Ireland as opposed to Northern Ireland.

How’s the top end been on it? I had a 335d and at only 30k miles it was the most unreliable car I’ve  owned by far (this includes 100k+ mile BMWs and half a century old GM products).

Its been just as reliable as the Honda Civic I had before it. Currently at 188k miles. What was wro ng with your 335d? Was it the swirl flaps?

Still likely from Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland up until quite recently had a separate registration office to the British mainland’s DVLA. There are still some differences such as Northern Irish cars still having to display a tax disk along with an MOT disk (the rest of the U.K. didn't have).

No, they remedied the undersized swirl flaps by the time mine was made. Carbon build up bad enough the head needed to be blasted, then the EGR cooler started leaking, then the whole intake and all the sensors had to be replaced, then the turbo seals started leaking. All at about 30k miles.

Sounds like you just had a lemon. The M57 engine is pretty reliable.

Side note: the revised swirl flaps were still problematic. The problem was always that the screws holding them in place would come loose and get sucked into the combustion chamber. Here in the UK, most people just get blanking plates put in.

Mine was under warranty, so thankfully no money out of my pocket.  I talked to my service writer about the issues before I sold it, and he said almost every one they sold had issues. That’s why I ended up dumping it.
